CEVA-VoP (Voice-over-Packet) Fully Integrated VoIP Solution

CEVA-VOP_small

With the increasing adoption of broadband connectivity, the required infrastructure is now in place for Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) services to finally reach critical mass. Responding to market demand, wireless communications carriers, software vendors and device manufacturers are striving to develop a range of products and services that exploit this technology.

CEVA-VoP

Smartphones that utilize WiFi connectivity, corporate desk phones that use the office network to support VoIP services, and residential broadband modems that offer voice capability are among a new breed of hybrid devices leveraging VoIP technology to offer consumers high quality voice communications at truly cost effective levels.

In order to address these market dynamics, CEVA has created a comprehensive solution for enabling a wide range of cost-sensitive VoIP products. CEVA-VoP is a fully integrated, single DSP-based voice co-processor supporting eight channels of voice, telephony, packetization, and host interface tasks. CEVA-VoP is delivered as a full-featured semiconductor intellectual property (IP) package that enables product developers to incorporate VoIP functionality seamlessly into their system-on-chip (SoC) designs.

Based on the widely adopted, programmable CEVA-TeakLite-II DSP core and the Xpert-TeakLite-II subsystem, the CEVA-VoP solution is capable of handling multiple, simultaneous, packet-voice channels on a single core. The result is a complete hardware and software solution that can be deployed as a sub-system delivering voice and telephony functionality in an integrated VoIP SoC.

The CEVA-VoP solution also includes all required DSP software, such as speech compression and decompression, echo cancellation, and telephony functions. The software is open, allowing licensees to add proprietary algorithms and broaden the use of the design for other markets or applications.

CEVA-VoP Target Applications

Target applications for the CEVA-VoP solution include Voice over DSL/Cable/PON, dual-mode Cellular/Voice-over-WiFi Phones, IP Phones, and residential gateways.

Solution Highlights

The CEVA-VoP solution is based on the very low power, low-cost, fully synthesizable CEVA-TeakLite-II DSP core. This core’s small die size and 16-bit instruction width ensures the production of low cost VoIP silicon solution with a small memory footprint.

The CEVA-TeakLite-II includes both DSP and CPU instructions and can operate at clock speeds of up to 620MHz, when implemented in the 40nm G process.

The capabilities of the CEVA-TeakLite-II DSP core are augmented by the highly integrated, highly efficient Xpert-TeakLite-II subsystem, which provides:

  • Cache memory that enables a low cost solution
  • A 3-channel DMA that reduces load on the DSP
  • External interfaces

- AHB Master interface
- APB to add off the shelf APB peripherals
- APB slave port for inter-processor communications

  • APB peripherals

- Power Management Unit, Timers, GPIO, Interrupt controller, Processor Interface Unit and Two TDM modules codec interface)

  • Configurable data and program memory and cache sizes
